German Higher Education and Research Fair, 5. bis zum 12. April 2004
Mit dem Ziel, junge ?High-Potentials?-Studierende für ein Studium in Deutschland zu gewinnen, präsentierten deutsche Hochschulvertreter Studien- und Forschungsmöglichkeiten in Deutschland. Mit großem Erfolg: 3.500 Studierende, Alumnis und Young Professionals besuchten die vierte "German Higher Education and Research Fair" in Vietnam. Messestandorte waren in diesem Jahr Hanoi und Ho Chi Minh City.

Für den Nordverbund (Universitäten Hamburg, Kiel und Bremen), das International Center for Graduate Studies (ICGS) und das Max-Planck-Institut für Meteorologie nahmen Dr. Nina Smidt (ICGS), Dr. Kay Heyckendorf, Prof. Dr. Eva-Maria Pfeiffer (beide Fachbereich Geowissenschaften, Universität Hamburg), Dr. Klaus Schwarzer (Institut für Geowissenschaften ? Geologie, Universität Kiel) und Phuong Ngo (für Universität Hamburg / Nordverbund) an der Veranstaltung teil.

?Master of International Business and Economics ? China Focus (MIBE-China)?
Beginning in October this year the International Center for Graduate Studies (ICGS) is offering a new, one-year Master program MIBE ? China Focus in cooperation with the faculty of Business and Economics at the University of Hamburg, the Institute of Asian Affairs (IFA) and the School of Management at the Fudan University in Shanghai. The first two trimesters are taught in Hamburg, the third directly at Fudan University in Shanghai. Students with a good knowledge of the Chinese language will have the possibility of receiving an additional MBA from Fudan University. The Master course covers the areas of modern economic theory, management practices and tools, as well as political and cultural knowledge required for Greater China on an interdisciplinary level. Internationally recognized faculty, lecturers and experienced practitioners present tailor-made courses, workshops, case studies and practical exercises. The Program is ideally suited for postgraduates and young professionals in the areas of economics, natural and social sciences as well as Asian studies. First Hanyang Winter Academy in German and European Studies: Law and Politics of the EU
?Korean law originates from Germany ? that?s why it is so interesting for us.? This was just one motivation for the 16 Korean law students to participate in ICGS? first Winter Academy in European Law and Politics. The one-month program (January 12 ? February 8, 2004) was jointly organized by ICGS and Dr. Carsten Nowak of the Europa-Kolleg Hamburg. During their four-week stay in Hamburg the Korean students enjoyed a very diverse and challenging academic program: EU history and institutions, corporate law, the internal market, free movement of workers and capital, the Economic Community, antitrust law and policy, corporate social responsibility, the WTO-system and European cultural studies. While all lectures were held in English, the Korean students also participated in a catered German language program. This enabled them not only to gain first-hand language experience but also to participate in some daily conversations. To reinforce that learned in the academic and language program, the group took part in a number of excursions to institutions like the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea, the Hanseatic Higher Regional Court and the Hamburg Parliament. Various optional excursions such as ice-skating or a classical concert in the Music Hall completed the afternoon and evening activities. At the farewell ceremony, where all students received an ICGS certificate, Dr. Dr. h.c. Jürgen Lüthje, President of the University of Hamburg, summarized the success of the Winter Academy: ?I can see your eyes have been opened ? you have truly gained a feeling for Europe.?

Entry Opportunities at Beiersdorf
A select group of scientific scholars took part in a one-day workshop jointly organized by ICGS' Career Service and the long-standing, Hamburg-based branded goods company Beiersdorf on January 29th. The international graduate students, Ph.D. scholars and post docs gained an insider view of the corporate environment and found out what kind of entry opportunities Beiersdorf has to offer. The Workshop began with presentations about the Research and Development and Personnel Departments, where the participants learned more about Beiersdorf innovations, products and company philosophy. A dynamic personal account from a new employee in the R+D Department provided a sound understanding of what a normal work day looks like and how their scientific background is relevant to the business activities at Beiersdorf. Informal discussions with Beiersdorf employees took place during lunch in the company cafeteria. In the afternoon, scholars enjoyed a tour of the Production Department, involving a first-hand view of how the company produces their internationally renowned NIVEA cream. A presentation given by a patent lawyer illustrated why patent law is becoming integrally important to scientists. The participants, the staff from Beidersdorf Human Resources department and the ICGS staff were satisfied with the workshop outcome. Future perspectives at Beiersdorf are possible...

Abend der Universitäts-Gesellschaft Hamburg
"Junge Wissenschaftler stellen Ihre Arbeiten vor" heißt das Motto der Veranstaltung, zu der die Universitäts-Gesellschaft Hamburg am 11. Dezember 2003, um 18.00 Uhr, in das Gästehaus der Universität einlädt. ICGS-Studentin Linda S. Schmidt spricht an diesem Abend über "Die psychologischen Aspekte interkulturellen Lernens und Zusammenlebens: die Förderung rationaler Hilfesuche".
