LLM BT:

From October 2005 to October 2007, ICGS offered the master program LL.M. Asian-European Business Transactions (Focus on China, ASEAN and the EU) in cooperation with the Law Faculty at the University of Hamburg. The full-time program required 60 ECTS credit points.

The program provided the legal basis for international transactions between Asia (in particular China) and Europe (in particular Germany) including dispute resolution and avoidance. It integrated modern academic teaching and practical training in law firms or companies. With its cooperation with the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUH), the LL.M. Program received an additional attractive feature. In 2007, lecturers from the CUH, together with selected Hamburg lecturers, offered a 10-days Hamburg-Hong Kong Academy on Chinese Trade and Investment Law.

The LL.M. Program Asian-European Business Transactions had been an immediate success and was thus particularly praised by Hamburg's Senator of Justice at the program's first graduation ceremony in October 2006. Numerous renowned law firms such as Lovells or White & Case were involved as internship and/or faculty partners, and the Hamburg Bar - the regional representation of all lawyers in Hamburg, in German "Hanseatische Rechtsanwaltskammer" - ensured that apart from excellent theoretical knowledge, the LLM graduates also possess the relevant practical experiences necessary to enter the international job market. Graduates work in science (PhD studies or special projects), law firms (as lawyers or consultants) and law departments of European and Asian companies.

Program modules covered the following areas:

  • Structure and Types of International Contractual Collaborations
  • Organizational and Financial Structure of International Transactions
  • Governmental Regulations and Mandatory Law
  • Design of International Contract Negotiations
  • International Dispute Management
  • Hamburg-Hong Kong Academy on Chinese Trade and Investment Law
Due to a wide range of lecturers of different Universities, the Max Planck Institute for Foreign Private Law and Private International Law, Bucerius Law School as well as lecturers of well known law firms, "LL.M. Asian-European Business Transactions" offered not only theoretical knowledge about handling international transactions but also first hand insights and experiences of lawyers working in this field.

We would like to thank all faculty members and program participants for their excellent cooperation.

MIBE Opening Ceremony

04.10.2006

3rd MIBE Class Kicks Off Program at Hamburg’s Town Hall
Learning together to promote cultural understanding – this was one of the key concepts highlighted at the Opening Ceremony for the MIBE Class of 2007 held on October 4, 2006 at Hamburg’s Town Hall. The incoming students in the Master/MBA of International Business & Economics (MIBE) – China Focus program, conducted jointly by ICGS and the Fudan University, Shanghai, as well as program instructors and guests were invited by the Hamburg Ministry of Science and Research (BWF) to a guided tour of the Town Hall followed by welcoming remarks from representatives of both Shanghai and Hamburg.

Dr. Roland Salchow, Permanent Secretary of the BWF, emphasized Hamburg’s long history of internationality and trade, accenting his speech with a number of anecdotes about several of the city’s landmarks. Prof. Lu Xiongwen, Dean of the School of Management at Fudan University, Shanghai, focused on the program’s duality and what the individual cultures represented by the program’s student body can gain from one another. Finally, Prof. Dr. Michel Clement of the University of Hamburg and new MIBE Program Director, urged students to spend time outside of the classroom and library making friends and contacts and, just as importantly, becoming acquainted with the host cultures.

The MIBE program, inaugurated in October 2004, is a one-year double degree program consisting of two trimesters in Hamburg and one in Shanghai. Applications for the program are accepted from January 1 through May 31 for non-EU applicants and from January 1 through July 31 for EU applicants. For additional program information please contact Patricia Bencek, ICGS, at bencek@icgs.de.

Farewell ceremony for Jordan doctors

24.05.2006

ICGS and Newmex Consulting award first HIMed certificates
After 4 months of intensive training in Hamburg hospitals and research institutions as part of the Hamburg International Medical Fellowship Program (HIMed), the four Jordan doctors have been awarded their final certificates on May 24, 2006. The HIMed Fellows 2006 all expressed their great satisfaction with the hospital and institutional training as well as with the academic program that included excursions to several institutions related to the health section and selected lectures. Visits to the Research and Development Headquarters of Beiersdorf AG, the Asklepios Klinik Barmbek, Airbus, DESY and Olympus Winter & Ibe represented some of the major program highlights. Lectures included topics such as intercultural communication between doctors and patients, medical ethics (stem embryonic research), and company presentations from Norgenta and MediMobil.

HIMed is a joint international executive program for Jordan doctors, developed by Newmex Consulting and the International Center for Graduate Studies (ICGS) at the University of Hamburg. It is officially managed by the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg who provided the financial means for the first HIMed year in 2006. Follow-up procedures include the building up of a sponsorship partner network in order to provide the necessary funding for further fellowship grants in 2007.

As part of their LLM degree in Asian-European Business Transactions, the students of this new successful Master program at ICGS take part in a 2-months internship period. From the beginning of May until the end of June 2006, all LLM students are working in either law firms or company departments in order to put into practise what has been taught in the different course modules from October to April. In 2006 the following law firms and companies are offering an internship:

- Brödermann & Jahn (lawyers)
- CAISSA Touristic Group AG
- Esche Schümann Commichau (lawyers)

Company visits and career-oriented workshops are also part of ICGS` regular career service activities in all master programs.
