LLM BT:
From October 2005
to October 2007, ICGS offered the master program LL.M. Asian-European
Business Transactions (Focus on China, ASEAN and the EU) in cooperation
with the Law Faculty at the University of Hamburg. The full-time program
required 60 ECTS credit points.
The program provided the legal basis for international transactions between
Asia (in particular China) and Europe (in particular Germany) including
dispute resolution and avoidance. It integrated modern academic teaching
and practical training in law firms or companies. With its cooperation
with the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUH), the LL.M. Program received
an additional attractive feature. In 2007, lecturers from the CUH, together
with selected Hamburg lecturers, offered a 10-days Hamburg-Hong Kong Academy
on Chinese Trade and Investment Law.
The LL.M. Program Asian-European Business Transactions had been an immediate
success and was thus particularly praised by Hamburg's Senator of Justice
at the program's first graduation ceremony in October 2006. Numerous renowned
law firms such as Lovells or White & Case were involved as internship
and/or faculty partners, and the Hamburg Bar - the regional representation
of all lawyers in Hamburg, in German "Hanseatische Rechtsanwaltskammer"
- ensured that apart from excellent theoretical knowledge, the LLM graduates
also possess the relevant practical experiences necessary to enter the
international job market. Graduates work in science (PhD studies or special
projects), law firms (as lawyers or consultants) and law departments of
European and Asian companies.
Program modules covered the following areas:
- Structure and Types of International Contractual Collaborations
- Organizational and
Financial Structure of International Transactions
- Governmental Regulations
and Mandatory Law
- Design of International
Contract Negotiations
- International Dispute
Management
- Hamburg-Hong Kong
Academy on Chinese Trade and Investment Law
Due to a wide range of lecturers of different Universities, the Max Planck
Institute for Foreign Private Law and Private International Law, Bucerius
Law School as well as lecturers of well known law firms, "LL.M. Asian-European
Business Transactions" offered not only theoretical knowledge about handling
international transactions but also first hand insights and experiences
of lawyers working in this field.
We would like to thank all faculty members and program participants for
their excellent cooperation.

Second Montblanc Excellence Award for Outstanding Student Achievement
|
26.10.2006
|
|
Ms. Xu Jun is the best MIBE student of the academic year 05/06
For the second time, Montblanc International gave its annual award to the academically outstanding student of the “Master/MBA International Business and Economics (MIBE) – China Focus” program 05/06. The awarding took place during the MIBE Graduation Ceremony at the School of Management, Fudan University in Shanghai on October 26, 2006. Montblanc International Managing Director Lutz Bethge himself handed over the special “Graduation Fountain Pen” to the award winner Ms. Xu Jun and invited her to a Hamburg visit in 2007. Sophia – this is her western name – cheerfully received the honour and expressed her gratitude in an affectionate speech. One year ago, the 26 six year old graduate started the MIBE program after having worked as financial analyst and is now heading for new career opportunities which will certainly be boosted by the award. Last year’s winner, Mr. Markus Gössler, has used his Montblanc Fountain Pen to sign a contract with one of the world’s leading consulting companies, Roland Berger.
The sequence of the awarding was directly transmitted to the University of Hamburg, where the new MIBE students, lecturers, friends and family of the graduates and press representatives could watch the festivity even without being in Shanghai. The transmission event with a press conference in the magnificent “Agathe Lasch Lecture Hall” was guided through by Anja Soltau, Deputy Director of ICGS, who introduced the speakers Prof. Dr. Karl Werner Hansmann, Acting President of the University of Hamburg and Wolff Heinrichsdorff, managing director of Montblanc International. The latter emphasized in his speech the importance of Montblanc’s philosophy regarding its cultural engagement which starts with the support of education. The MIBE program with its China focus exactly meets the demands of such a globally operating company like Montblanc International.
After the official graduation ceremony, press representatives from Shanghai and Hamburg had the possibility of interviewing Mr. Bethge and Mr. Heinrichsdorff during a bidirectional transmission between the two locations.
The complex technical operations were made possible by the excellent cooperation between Dr. Felbecker, head of Media Consulting of the University of Hamburg, the colleagues from Fudan University and Delphis Dialog who organized the event on behalf of Montblanc International.

Hamburg senator of Justice congratulates first LLM graduates and welcomes the new class
“The championship is over but the game continues!” This metaphor used by Prof. Paschke, program director of ICGS’ LL.M. Program “Asian-European Business Transactions”, in his speech perfectly describes the combined Graduation and Opening Ceremony which was held in the Town Hall of Hamburg on October 10th , 2006. All students of the LLM Asian-European Business Transactions class of 2005/2006 graduated successfully and received their official certificates that evening, while 12 new ambitious students started their lectures that same week and are looking forward to gain experience and broaden their knowledge in the field of international business and trade law concerning commercial trade between Asia/China and Europe.
First of all Senator of Justice Dr. Carsten Lüdemann welcomed all guests on behalf of the City of Hamburg and Dr. Eckart Brödermann held a welcome speech on behalf of the Hamburg Bar and as head of the program’s board. Afterwards program director Prof. Paschke handed out the degree certificates. The host and the location of the ceremony point out the support and the importance given by the City of Hamburg and all program partners to the highly skilled participants of the LL.M. “Asian – European Business Transactions”. In addition to the already strong international focus of the program, and due to a newly established cooperation between the International Center for Graduate Studies (ICGS) and the Chinese University of Hong Kong, the 2006-2007 class of the program will benefit from the lecturers of the “Hamburg – Hong Kong Academy on Chinese Trade and Investment Law and Transactional Advisory”. This Academy is run in cooperation with Ernst & Young AG Hamburg as well as Luther Law Firm and will, beside offering first-hand information from an Asian perspective, encourage international dialogue among academia and business.
