MIBE Students win Most Innovative Team Award
The 1st Youth Innovation Competition on Global Governance (YICGG) awarded "Most Innovative Team" Prize to a team of students from the Dual-Degree Program Master/MBA International Business and Economics (MIBE) – China Focus from Hamburg University/ICGS and Fudan University. Their project slogan "Carry the Torch of Environmental Change" calls upon citizens of the earth to personally and individually engage in saving energy.
More than 20 teams and students from over 15 countries participated in the YICGG, which was held at Fudan University in Shanghai from July 10 to 14. The winning team consisting of MIBE students Catarina Meyer (Germany), Miao Dong (China), Dr. Oliver Prüfer (Germany), Sebastian Huber (Switzerland) and Marcus Gladers (Germany) participated with a project proposal in the area of environmental governance. They proposed to organise events around the world where communities replace traditional light bulbs with energy-saving green-lights as a citizens' initiative for bettering the environment through improving energy efficiency and lowering energy consumption.
"Citizens have to understand their individual impact on the global debate on climate change and energy saving", says initiator Sebastian Huber. "With a simple concept like replacing light bulbs, young citizens can learn about how easy but how effective their personal daily contribution can be in making this world a better place." While studying in Hamburg, the students learnt about this competition through the Fudan University newsletter and website where YICGG was announced in January this year.
During the Award Ceremony, UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative in China Mr. Khalid Malik stressed his support for this project idea and invited the team to be involved in similar UN initiatives under way. While the students continue their MIBE education at Fudan University until October, eventual cooperation with the UNDP might allow the project proposal to be implemented in reality.
To promote youth creativity in the design of global governance, the School of International Relations and Public Affairs (SIRPA) of Fudan University initiated and sponsored the First Youth Innovation Competition on Global Governance in 2007. Youth elites and future leaders from all fields were invited to join global issues, exploring the potentials of innovation, stimulating a sense of responsibility and building up a global community.
