LLM BT:

From October 2005 to October 2007, ICGS offered the master program LL.M. Asian-European Business Transactions (Focus on China, ASEAN and the EU) in cooperation with the Law Faculty at the University of Hamburg. The full-time program required 60 ECTS credit points.

The program provided the legal basis for international transactions between Asia (in particular China) and Europe (in particular Germany) including dispute resolution and avoidance. It integrated modern academic teaching and practical training in law firms or companies. With its cooperation with the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUH), the LL.M. Program received an additional attractive feature. In 2007, lecturers from the CUH, together with selected Hamburg lecturers, offered a 10-days Hamburg-Hong Kong Academy on Chinese Trade and Investment Law.

The LL.M. Program Asian-European Business Transactions had been an immediate success and was thus particularly praised by Hamburg's Senator of Justice at the program's first graduation ceremony in October 2006. Numerous renowned law firms such as Lovells or White & Case were involved as internship and/or faculty partners, and the Hamburg Bar - the regional representation of all lawyers in Hamburg, in German "Hanseatische Rechtsanwaltskammer" - ensured that apart from excellent theoretical knowledge, the LLM graduates also possess the relevant practical experiences necessary to enter the international job market. Graduates work in science (PhD studies or special projects), law firms (as lawyers or consultants) and law departments of European and Asian companies.

Program modules covered the following areas:

  • Structure and Types of International Contractual Collaborations
  • Organizational and Financial Structure of International Transactions
  • Governmental Regulations and Mandatory Law
  • Design of International Contract Negotiations
  • International Dispute Management
  • Hamburg-Hong Kong Academy on Chinese Trade and Investment Law
Due to a wide range of lecturers of different Universities, the Max Planck Institute for Foreign Private Law and Private International Law, Bucerius Law School as well as lecturers of well known law firms, "LL.M. Asian-European Business Transactions" offered not only theoretical knowledge about handling international transactions but also first hand insights and experiences of lawyers working in this field.

We would like to thank all faculty members and program participants for their excellent cooperation.

Information about work permits for foreign students

Students often have a need to earn a little extra money on the side. This extra work however should never involve more than simply casual or temporary work, otherwise studies could suffer.

Foreign students who do not come from member states of the European Union, from EEA countries and/or from Switzerland are only allowed to take on a limited amount of paid employment without having to obtain a work permit. Foreign students do not require a formal work permit when a temporary job does not exceed a total of three months of employment per year.
This can be arranged as follows:

90 days per year (8 hour days); or
180 days per year (4 hour days);
2 days a week for a total of 45 weeks per year.

Individual hours per day are not allowed.

The expression 'Ferienarbeit erlaubt' (work permitted during vacation) must be indicated in the student visa issued by the immigration authorities.

Since 2005, a residence permit bound to a specific purpose can be issued to university graduates for up to one year after the successful completion of studies for the purpose of looking for a job. This job must be

1. appropriate to the degree or qualification, and
2. must be a job that the provisions of the Immigration Act allow to be taken by foreigners, i.e. the Employment Agency must approve the employment and a priority check (Vorrangprüfung) must possibly be carried out.

For more detailed information regarding the immigration regulations and restrictions for international students please refer to the website of the German Academic Exchange Service.
