A Brief History
With its broad variety of study programs and its renowned research facilities the University of Hamburg provides excellent conditions for cross-disciplinary approaches at an internationally recognized level. In 1999, within the context of the 'Pro Uni' university reform project, the University started an initiative to attract highly qualified international students and develop new graduate programs on an interdepartmental basis for outstanding individuals holding a Bachelor's degree.
With the support of two of Germany's most important foundations, the VolkswagenStiftung and the Ebelin and Gerd Bucerius ZEIT-Foundation, President Dr. Dr. h.c. Jürgen Lüthje founded the International Center for Graduate Studies (ICGS) at the University of Hamburg, which then received the legal status of a non-profit limited liability company (gGmbH) in 2002. Today, in close cooperation with the University's departments and institutes as well as with select research institutions and a large company network, ICGS offers internationally oriented study and training programs for graduate students, young professionals and executives from all over the world.
